Effective date: 5 October 2025

Syllable Reader (“we”, “us”, “the Extension”) respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information in accordance with the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR).

1. Controller

Controller: Syllable Reader
Contact: support@syllablereader.com
Website: https://syllablereader.com

2. What data we process

Syllable Reader is designed to run entirely within your browser. We do not collect, transmit, or store personal data on our servers.

All text processing (tokenization, highlighting, and speech synthesis) occurs locally on your device. We do not use cookies, third‑party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

The only information that may be stored is user preferences (for example: selected voice, highlight colour, font size). These preferences are stored locally in your browser using Chrome’s local storage and do not leave your device.

3. Lawful basis for processing

Because Syllable Reader does not collect personal data or transmit it off‑device, most provisions of UK GDPR do not apply in the traditional sense. Local preference storage is used only to provide the requested functionality and is necessary for the operation of the Extension.

4. Sharing and transfers

We do not sell, rent, or share personal data with third parties. No personal data is transferred outside the user’s device.

5. User rights

Under UK GDPR, data subjects have various rights (access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection, and data portability). As Syllable Reader does not process or retain personal data centrally, these rights are generally not applicable. If you believe any personal data relating to you has been processed in error, please contact us at support@syllablereader.com and we will investigate.

6. Children’s privacy

The Extension is not intended for use by children under 13. Because the Extension does not collect or store personal data, no child data processing is performed.

7. Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the integrity of the Extension and prevent accidental loss or unauthorized access. Because preferences are stored locally, their security depends partly on the device and browser security the user uses.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.

9. Contact & complaints

For questions about this Privacy Policy or our data practices, contact us at: support@syllablereader.com.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO): https://ico.org.uk.
