SyllableReader runs in any web browser. Teachers and students can use it on school laptops, Chromebooks, or any device with Chrome, Edge or Firefox — no apps to install and no IT approval needed beyond the extension itself.
Syllable mode, OpenDyslexic font, Bionic Reading and Masking Mode reduce cognitive load. Students can read independently without a teaching assistant beside them.
Students with ADHD or attention difficulties
Masking Mode covers the screen except for the word being read. Focus Mode dims everything outside the current paragraph. Auto-scroll keeps the page moving at a controlled pace.
EAL / EFL students
Hear any word pronounced correctly in context. Syllable Mode shows how English words break down phonetically. Custom Words Dictionary for specialist vocabulary.
Reluctant or struggling readers
Tutoring Mode gives students safe, private reading practice — no embarrassment in front of classmates. They hear a word, read it back, and get immediate feedback.
Students needing reading scaffolding
Follow-along TTS means students keep up with reading assignments even when decoding is difficult. Guide strip and ruler prevent losing their place.
KEY CLASSROOM FEATURES
Tutoring Mode — Reading Practice Without the Embarrassment
The extension speaks a word aloud, then waits while the student says it back. The speech recognition engine scores accuracy in real time and gives feedback such as “Perfect!” or “Try again.” A summary at the end of the session shows every word attempted and accuracy score. Students practise independently, privately, at their own pace.
Words are spoken syllable by syllable — beau·ti·ful, in·for·ma·tion — so students can hear and see the internal structure of words. Particularly effective for students working on phonics and decoding, EAL students learning English pronunciation, and students preparing for spelling tests. · Tier: Pro, Elite
Listen & Highlight — Guided Reading Companion
The student reads a passage aloud. SyllableReader listens and highlights each word as the student says it, tracking their position in the text. If they lose their place the highlighting shows exactly where they are. · Tier: Elite
OpenDyslexic Font
One button switches the entire webpage to OpenDyslexic, a typeface designed to reduce common letter-confusion errors. Students with dyslexia can activate it without changing any browser settings. · Tier: Pro, Elite

✅ Privacy & Safeguarding: SyllableReader does not collect, transmit, or store any content that students read. All text processing happens locally in the browser. No student data is sent to any server. Microphone access (Tutoring Mode / Listen & Highlight) is processed by the browser’s built-in speech recognition — it is not recorded or transmitted to SyllableReader.
